Make Your Own 4-Hole Ocarina

Course Description

Experience the process of combining clay, water, fire, and air to make and play your own ocarina. In a friendly and relaxing atmosphere, I will take you through the fascinating process of creating your instrument using clay from the studio and a kit of tools that I have put together specially for this class. There are many different styles of ocarinas varying in shape and the number of holes. This workshop will focus on the 4 hole ocarina. You will have the freedom to add volume to the basic body of the ocarina to form a bird, four-legged animal, or a simple organic shape. Each student will have the option to decorate the surface of the clay using different techniques that I will teach during the class. This one-day workshop includes these steps: 1. Greetings. I will introduce myself briefly and share why I recommend this humble instrument as a form of mindfulness. 2. Breve introduction to the history of the ocarina. 3. Detailed step by step demonstration of how to build the body of the instrument, the mouth pieces, as well as the 4 holes. 4. Then you will hand build your own clay ocarina following the steps learned previously. I will be available for support, guidance, and troubleshooting during this process. The sound will be tested and perfected in this step. 5. Lunch break. Please bring your own lunch. 6. After building the ocarina we will focus on adding volume to the body in strategic places to make it truly yours and unique in shape. 7. During the last step we will be decorating the final object. I will teach you how to burnish the ocarina using an agate tool, as well as how to draw figures or patterns on the smooth surface. 8. Lisa will fire your piece. You will be able to pick up your ocarina when ready, or we can pack it and ship it to your address.

Cancellation Policy

**PAYMENTS:** -MANUAL payments: need to be paid within a week of registering. - CHECK payments: Pay to "Lisa Naples" at 5 S Harrison St. Frenchtown NJ 08825. - CASH payments: Pay in-person within a week of registering. WORKSHOP CANCELLATION (different cancelation policy due to the nature of students traveling distances) Cancelations that take place greater than 1 month prior to a start date are fully refundable (minus a $100 admin fee). Those that come in 2-4 weeks ahead of a start-date are refunded by half. Those that come in w/in 2 weeks of a start date are non-refundable with the following exceptions: illness, accident, death in family. Registrants who fall into one of these noted categories are given a credit for a future workshop of the same or greater number of days.
