Course Description

Hand-building techniques used to create pottery are plentiful and can be daunting. Where do you start when the options are endless? How can you build a foundation of knowledge so when you look at an inspirational photo, you can decipher how to capture a specific shape, detail or expression? This course presents a range of different techniques for building form and creating vessels while encouraging you to stay true to your own vision, inherent interests and material exploration. We will learn techniques of slab building (soft and firm), coil building, pinching and using bisque molds to create form. The process of creating form is not only additive but also subtractive: working from a rough silhouette and scraping away at the surface to reveal a refined shape and exterior. Allowing yourself to be patient and present as familiarity with the materials and understanding of the process unfolds is the intention of this class. Cost of the class is $495 which covers all materials except for clay which can be purchased for $14/12.5lb bag.
