Jeanine Pennell
I began my journey in clay in 2017. After having no luck at the wheel I began to hand build my figures.

I create quirky, whimsical figures that draw you in to deeply human stories.
My pieces are poised between the safety of whimsy and the darkness of the things we find hard to say. My faces convey vulnerability and evoke story lines.

Each figure is hand sculpted in kiln-fired paperclay, hand painted in underglaze washes and typically fired multiple timesto create a gritty, illustrative quality.

After a piece is complete, I spend Time journaling about the art and my experience creating it, trying to excavate the deeper meaning that I know is present in the piece.
