Course Description

In this immersive class, you will make three unique ocarinas combining clay, water, fire, and air. In a friendly and relaxing atmosphere, I will take you through the steps of creating these musical instruments in three different sizes using a kit of tools that I have put together specially for this class. No musical experience is required, we will be focusing on the creative aspects of these objects as art, and the sounds that they produce to practice mindfulness. There are many different styles of ocarinas varying in shape and the number of holes. This workshop will focus on three of them: the 4-hole, the 6-hole, and the 8-hole ocarina. One will be simple, the other two will be sculpted to look like a bird, animal, organic shape, etc. Students will decorate the surface of the ocarinas using three different techniques. This three-day workshop includes these steps: Day 1 1. I will introduce myself and share my ocarina-making experience as a creative and mindfulness practice. 2. You will listen to music created with clay instruments to absorb the possibilities of clay as a material capable of creating beautiful sounds. 3. Detailed step-by-step demonstration of how to build the body of an ocarina, the mouthpiece, as well as the holes. 4. Lunch break. Please bring your own lunch. 5. You will hand-build your first clay ocarina (4-hole) following the steps learned. The sound will be tested and perfected in this step. 6. Decorating the ocarina with underglaze. Letting the piece dry so it can be bisque-fired by Lisa later. Day 2 1. Creating the bodies of the second and third ocarinas using the steps learned on day one. I will teach you how to open 6 holes in one of them and 8 holes in the other. 2. Lunch break. Please bring your own lunch. 3. Adding volume to the bodies of your ocarinas in strategic places to make them truly yours and unique in shape. 4. I will teach you how to burnish one of the ocarinas using an agate tool. After the surface is smooth, I’ll teach you how to make different decorative marks on the surface. Day 3 1. Glazing the ocarina made on day one using a technique that I'll teach you. 2. We will decorate the ocarina that was not burnished with the agate tool using underglaze. 3. I will encourage you to build a fourth or more ocarinas using the tools provided and decorate them with underglazes or using the agate burnishing tool. 4. Lisa will fire your ocarinas. You can pick them up or we'll ship them at cost.
