Brian Jones podcast: interview with Lisa

Potter Brian Jones trained out to Doylestown last Thursday from The Clay Studio in Phila. to record our conversation concerning a wide range of topics apropos to the life of a ceramic artist. I’m always delighted to speak on this subject to anyone working in clay but there was an added level of interest for me as Brian and I are exactly 20 years apart (I be the elder here).
Some things have changed for one trying to establish themselves post-grad school and some things will never change. Brian’s visit reminded me of how much I love the connection among potters. We’d met a few times over the years but never had the pleasure of hanging out. There was no shortage of things to talk about/argue about. It was easy and super fun. Didn’t hurt that he’s such a doll of a person and an excellent interviewer. Check out his work here. And click here for the pod-cast ep. #13 Lisa Naples

All I wrote about the “textured cups” applies here only there’s that added energy of the drawing and stories that I play with on these. The lovely thing for me, working with the image of crow is that it’s a continuous revelation of subject matter. I’m ever grateful to be part of this flowing energy.

So far, here are some of the stories:

Crows moving eggs around the lower parts of the cups are creatures working in concert.

Where there’s a crow with an egg in it’s mouth and another screaming it’s “Caw-Caw-Caw” at it, the screaming crow usually has feathers turning into eggs as you turn those cups around. These are all about abundance and scarcity…about what we ‘think we know’ and how, when we get uber focused like that, we miss obvious things going on around us.

I look forward to more stories surfacing as I practice, play and stay open in my studio.

Anyone who has been in a committed relationship knows this story.

There’s an argument followed by the passage of time which allows for a softening.

One partner is the designated peacemaker and begins the thaw which leads to reconciliation.

The writer Kenneth Patchen once wrote that “Caring is the only Daring”. I tend to agree.

This piece is all about the creative process…mine at least. I’ve narrowed it down to this: #1: play, #2: practice, #3:not knowing but moving forward anyway.

So, this means that I have no idea where to begin which, let’s face it, is stressful. But the price of admission to the process is play so that means mustering enough confidence to allow the stress to have a seat over in the corner.

It doesn’t matter where I start but THAT I start. Then the material always brings information and inspiration so I pick up some threads there and continue to practice until something starts to take shape and understanding begins.

In this piece I started with a vintage roller skate and a cake beater (that pink scepter-ish thing has a metal beater core). I chose the image of rabbits b/c they always seem playful to me and represent creatures who must deal with fear a lot being that they’re commonly prey. Their fertility wasn’t lost on me either.

They’re entering the mysterium (the creative process) blindfolded and bringing their dandiest carrot sceptor as a gift to the gods.
